Heat signature examination of fingertips is a new attack technique used by fraudsters to crack PINs through ATMs and POS machines.
This is done using a combination of thermal imaging and AI algorithms. The brighter the area appears on the snapped thermal image, the more recently it would have been touched. This helps them guess the PINs accurately
Tips to safeguard
- Avoid using ATMs which are unguarded and not surveilled properly with video cameras
- Press multiple random number keys (buttons) before leaving the ATM machine to generate non meaningful heat signature
- Hide the keypad area while entering the PIN
- Properly check the SMSs and emails sent by your bank regarding any transactions
